The Historical Marker Program
The Historical Marker Program
- Any building that retains most of it's historic appearance and integrity. It should retain its original shape & roofline.
- 50 years old or older.
- A building that is associated with historic figures, or historic events may be eligible regardless of age
- The marker includes the historic name of the building and the date of its construction
- The historic name is that of the original occupant or, if the original occupant was there only a few years, the first long-term occupant of the building, whether a private house or a commercial or public building. If there are two, or even three, long-term occupancies over time, then both or all those names will be used if possible.
Local Historic Advisory Committee Applications
Each applicant must submit to the Local Historic Advisory Committee, the same information required for submittal to the City of Birmingham Design Review Committee (DRC). For example; elevation drawings, site plan , color rendering, material samples, color samples, color photos of property, etc.

- Accurate property lines.
- Location, size, and height of all existing and/or proposed structures.
- Parking layout and maneuvering space as well as driveways and walkways.
- Setback (front, side and rear yard) dimensions for all existing and/or proposed structures, including main buildings, accessory structures.
