Mountain Brook
One of the most Desirable Locations in Birmingham
If you are considering a move to Birmingham and want to live near some of the best restaurants and retail stores, all while remaining a stones throw away from downtown Birmingham, Mountain Brook is a beautiful, desirable and convenient community to settle down in. Mountain Brook's historic architecture, which includes sprawling estates that lie amongst picturesque creeks, parks and walking trails, along with a top tier public school system makes this city a desirable location to raise a family. Called the City of Trees, you would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful setting than Mountain Brook. Mountain Brook has one of the wealthiest zip codes in all of Alabama. It is not as ethnically diverse as the city of Homewood or some of the other "Over the Mountain" communities. Real estate prices remain some of the highest in the city. Whether you are a young couple looking to purchase your first high end home, or an established homeowner in search of an upgrade, you will find plenty of homes to choose from in Mountain Brook. Mountain Brook will no doubt remain one of Birmingham's strongest housing markets.
A Brief History of Mountain Brook

Originally known as Watkins Branch, the name Mountain Brook came into being in the 1920's. The name arose from the name of the Mountain Brook Estates development. Mountain Brook was incorporated in 1942.
- Robert Jemison Jr. is referred to as the Father of Mountain Brook. He was a real estate developer and visionary.
- John Perryman operated a gristmill from 1867-1887. Located along what is now Mountain Brook Parkway, a new building was added in 1927, and became the Old Mill Tearoom. It is now a private residence.
- In 1822, William Pullen received the Lane Park land which encompasses the Zoo, Botanical Gardens and the Lane Park Shopping Center. In 1889 it was sold to the City of Birmingham by Pullen's heirs. It later became a cemetery with over 4,700 graves which were later relocated to make room for a park, Lane Park, which at different times contained a baseball diamond, driving range, fishery, and stone quarry.
- In May of 1910, the first Tuberculosis sanatorium opened as a small cluster of tents at the Cahaba Rd and Fairway Dr intersection, which is where the shops and restaurants of English Village are now located.
